Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
