The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like conventional body horror, but beneath Together exists a profound examination about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple confront the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
